BIOG

Bill Leslie is a visual artist based in London. His work deploys various modes and styles of presentation and juxtaposition, drawing on diverse references including Modern abstract sculpture, 1950s B-Movies, as well as Russian Constructivism and modern architecture.

Central to his practice are the ways in which an image, object, or idea develops through multiple processes. Working with film, photography, sculpture, and performance, new forms and compositions are teased out, through transformations of scale, context and media. This shifting of contexts asks questions of the nature of the works. What is the status of sculpture made to be filmed? How contingent are objects on their mode of presentation?

There is a tension across the work between abstract and depictional forms, clean lines and the obvious marks of craftsmanship, or the peculiarities of a given medium. Crudely shaped, brightly coloured objects appear beside geometric, architectural forms, and appropriated imagery. Transformation is a key concept as these objects are contrived into improbable set-like arrangements with cinematic effect.

Current projects involve using lo-fi materials such as painted cardboard, expanding foam, paper maché and clay, to create objects which are arranged into small sculptural tableau.
